“How much should I spend on Google Ads?” is the first question most business owners ask us. The honest answer is that it depends on three numbers you can estimate before spending a single rupee. This post shows how to work out how much to spend on Google Ads using those numbers, and how to tell whether the budget is working once it is live.
The three numbers that decide your budget
| Number | What it means | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per click (CPC) | What you pay each time someone clicks your ad | Google Keyword Planner, for your exact services and city |
| Conversion rate | Share of visitors who call, WhatsApp or fill a form | Your current website data, or assume 5 to 10% for a focused landing page |
| Customer value | What a new customer is worth to you over time | Your own sales records |
Step 1: Find your real cost per click
Every industry has a different click price. A tuition centre might pay a few tens of rupees per click. A real estate developer or a cosmetic clinic can pay several hundred rupees for one click, because each customer is worth so much more.
Open Google Keyword Planner, enter the searches your customers use, set the location to your city, and note the “top of page bid” range. Use the middle of that range for planning.
Step 2: Work backwards from a lead
This is the core formula:
Cost per lead = Cost per click ÷ Conversion rate
An example: at ₹50 per click and an 8% conversion rate, one lead costs about ₹625. If you want 40 leads a month, your starting budget is roughly ₹25,000 a month in ad spend.
| Leads wanted per month | Cost per lead | Monthly ad spend |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | ₹625 | ₹12,500 |
| 40 | ₹625 | ₹25,000 |
| 80 | ₹625 | ₹50,000 |
These figures are an illustration using the example numbers above, not a benchmark for your industry.
Step 3: Check it against customer value
A ₹625 lead is expensive for a ₹500 product and a bargain for a ₹5 lakh interior project. Ask two questions:
- How many leads does it take to win one customer? If it is 1 in 5, a customer costs about ₹3,125 in ads.
- Is that comfortably below the profit a customer brings you?
If the maths does not work, the problem is usually the offer or the landing page, not Google Ads itself.
Step 4: Give it enough time and money to learn
Google’s bidding needs data to improve. A budget spread too thin across many services and areas gets a handful of clicks each, and you learn nothing. Start narrow: your best service, your best area, and a budget you can sustain for at least three months.
The mistakes that burn budgets
Most wasted spend we see in audits comes from the same few issues:
- Broad keywords that attract the wrong searches, such as “free”, “jobs” or “course”.
- No negative keyword list.
- Paid traffic sent to a slow, generic homepage instead of a focused landing page. Speed matters here; see how website speed affects conversions.
- No conversion tracking, so nobody knows which keywords produce enquiries.
- Ads running 24 hours when nobody is there to answer the phone.
Fix these before increasing any budget.
How to tell if the budget is working
After the first month, compare your actual cost per lead with the estimate from Step 2. If it is close, scale up slowly, by about 20% at a time. If it is far higher, check search terms, landing page speed and tracking before spending more.
Over the longer term, Google Ads work best alongside SEO. Ads bring enquiries now; SEO lowers your cost per lead over time. Our guide on how to start SEO for a small business covers that side.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good starting budget for a small business?
Work it out from your own cost per click and conversion rate (Step 2). Then pick a figure you can keep running for three months without stress.
Should I pay Google daily or monthly?
Google charges based on a daily budget averaged across the month. Set the daily budget as your monthly figure divided by about 30.4.
How much to spend on Google Ads when I’m just testing?
Enough to get a meaningful number of clicks on one service and one area: usually a few hundred clicks over a month. Fewer than that, and results are mostly luck.
